Internet service and speed disrupted in Pakistan due to a fault in submarine cables

The fault was detected in a cable which is at a distance of 400 km from Pakistan’s coast

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), a malfunction in the underwater cable has impacted internet service and speed across Pakistan.

The fault happened in the TransWorld 1 (TW1) cable at a distance of about 400 kilometres off the coast of Pakistan, according to the details. TW1 is a 1,300-kilometer cable system that connects Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.

PTA issued a statement in which they revealed the issue at hand, “Internet services could cause disruption across Pakistan due to a cut reported in TransWorld 1 (TW1) submarine cable system.”

“A cable cut has been reported in TransWorld (TW1) submarine cable system at about 6 PM on Monday, this fault has caused an outage of international bandwidth and may result in degradation of internet services for users of TransWorld bandwidth,” the statement continued.

PTA’s statement concluded that “The consortium is arranging Adhoc bandwidth to minimise the impact. Efforts are going on to ascertain the exact location of the fault and expected restoration time.”

From time to time internet issues due to submarine cables arise in Pakistan. At the end of December 2021, a fault in submarine cables led to the internet speed in the country being reduced by one terabyte.
